There’s a difference between cost and value, and it’s all-too easy to overlook this while we’re working out the budget. Here’s why spending more can actually cost you less.
It pays to invest in quality
The problem is, when we’re thinking about budgets, we (understandably) focus on the immediate price rather than the long-term cost. Cutting corners rarely saves you money in the long term, but there’s always a temptation to keep the expenditure low.
Author Terry Pratchett described the dilemma perfectly in what became known as “The Boots Theory.” His Discworld character Captain Vimes muses on the cost – and value – of buying boots.
A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.
It’s the same with underfloor heating and plumbing kit: when products are built to last and systems work first time, you pay only once. When we design a system, we’re thinking as far ahead as fifty years’ working life (something our forebears understood better than we do).
If you’re a self-builder or DIYer, longevity simply makes sense – you don’t want to buy anything twice. If you’re installing UFH on behalf of a customer, the more reliable and robust the kit is, the less likely you are to have complaints, call-backs and problems further down the line.
