At Continal Underfloor Heating, we often receive enquiries from installers and self-builders who want to fit underfloor heating (UFH) as part of retrofit projects in existing buildings. One such enquiry was a request for help with the installation of UFH across the 93m2 ground floor of an old Forge in Penzance.
As with all such refurbishments, the project came with some challenges due to the existing floor, which comprised extremely hard, uneven Quarry Tiles that could not be removed to make way for the UFH.
Our client was determined to have UFH in the property so our Technical Sales Adviser, Harry King, recommended that she first use a self-levelling compound on the Quarry tiled floor to create an even flooring surface. Then, we specified our TileFix®-18 system be laid over the top of the compound once it was set, creating a brand-new surface where a new tile floor could be installed.
TileFix® is the only UFH system that installers can tile directly onto. It provides a fast-response, high-compressive strength that is ideal for both newbuild and renovation projects.

Typically installed over existing solid or timber deck floors, TileFix® is suitable for use with ceramic, porcelain, marble and stone tiles when fitted using a suitable tile adhesive. The panels come with pre-routed pipe channels for ease of installation into which Continal’s 12mm pipe can be laid, resulting in an extremely low-profile system that minimises floor height build up in existing buildings. Pipe spacings are available in 100mm and 150mm sizes, making it easier for installers to ensure the system is designed to provide the correct heat output while maximising efficiencies.
We completed the UFH system with our wireless Quantum hub and controls, making sure it would be easy to set up and minimising disruption by removing the need to run wires throughout the property.
