When design matters

Underfloor heating blog

Older properties, extensions, renovations, multi-level buildings… Different constructions, different finishes, a combination of systems… Underfloor heating is not a one-size-fits-all solution. That’s why getting the design right is so important.

Many UFH companies sell their products through builders’ merchants, leaving contractors and heating engineers to work out the best system configuration themselves. It’s a risky approach, because as we all know (hopefully not from experience), it’s not quick, simple or cheap to re-install an ineffective UFH system.

Good design…

… gives you an efficient UFH system

The key is to get the design right long before you lay the first inch of pipework. To work out the best heat outputs, the design should take into account the floor construction and the desired final floor covering, as well as the building’s size and insulation levels.

That’s why we sell systems, not parts. There’s nothing more frustrating than hearing about quality components that aren’t operating efficiency because of poor or ad hoc system design. Good design gives you seamless integration of all elements, making sure that everything works together at maximum efficiency.

… makes sure you’re singing from the same hymn sheet CAD plan

Underfloor heating involves different trades working together. The clearer the plans, the smoother the project to manage.

If you need to make changes to the system as the work progresses, liaising with the design team keeps everything on track, as our customer Richard found.

From early days in the project, the Continal team was able to design and specify all the details required for a fast, hassle-free design that really works very efficiently. They were on hand during changes to the design as the project evolved, and the help they gave the electrician on connection day gave us peace of mind.

… can make even a complex installation straightforward

We often combine different UFH systems into one project. A trade customer requested a combination of a traditional screed system and our OneBoard® structural panels – in the same room. While this isn’t unusual on different levels, having an open-plan living room with different installs is pretty rare. The two systems also needed separate stats, as the warm-up / cool-down times weren’t the same.

It was a complex design, so the skill of our team wasn’t just to provide an effective solution: it was to come up with CAD plans and instructions that were straight forward for the installer.

Our customer was very pleased with how easy the system was to install, despite its complex design. The individual thermostats gave the homeowner great control over the temperature, even in such a large open-plan space. And this, ladies and gents, is why bespoke design matters.

…also has to work on site…

We understand life on a building site. And as always, welike to keep things practical.

The CAD plan was clear, enablingus to fit it exactly to plan - and because it was large and laminated, wedidn’t lose it either!

We’ve now designed over 100,000 UFH systems, each one bespoke.
