Underfloor heating case study

Products: AluPlate™ fit-from-above, SUPERflex™ 16mm pipe

It's not every day we come across unusual projects, but a Norwegian log cabin in Somerset was certainly one.

Our client wasn't sure whether underfloor heating was a viable option for his project. If it were possible, what would be his best options?

The log cabin didn't have the conventional new floor make-up of a concrete-based structure followed by insulation and screed; and the exposed joists narrowed down the system choices.  Our client also had to be careful about how much weight the underfloor heating might add to the floor for structural load bearing.

The solution

The system needed to be lightweight, and had to be fitted on exposed joists. Our Technical Sales Adviser suggested our fit-from-above AluPlate™ system. These lightweight aluminium 0.6mm thick pre-grooved sheets are very easy to install, and were a perfect solution.

They are available in variants suitable for 400mm and 600mm c/c joists and pipe spacings of 100mm, 150mm or 200mm. In this particular case the customer was provided with 400mm x 200mm centres as he was running the underfloor heating from his boiler, so had a high flow temperature.

To keep weight down to a minimum, our Technical Sales Adviser also suggested he use our SUPERflex™ pipe. This 16mm PERT pipe is lighter than AluPlas® because it doesn't have the aluminium core. On top of this, it also has the benefit of extreme flexibility.  This combined with our AluPlate™ fit-from-above system gives a fast, easy installation, perfect for this project.

Don't dismiss the idea of underfloor heating for unconventional constructions. It can actually be used in most scenarios and settings - just ask us.
The result

They will definitely not be feeling Scandinavian temperatures in this Norwegian log cabin this winter!

The customer was delighted that underfloor heating was possible, meaning he could have more design freedom. He also had a very efficient, lightweight system that was so simple to install.
